Alresford's finest traditional pub
The Horse and Groom occupies a prominent position in the centre of Alresford. The earliest dated document of the Inn refers to a lease at a rental of £12 per annum between Joanne Green and John Fielder in 1778, although the Inn dates back to the 17th century.
The property was conveyed in 1886 from the Innkeeper, a John Butler, to the City of Winchester Brewery and probably remained in their ownership until Strong & Co. of Romsey acquired the premises around 1931.
In 1969, Strongs of Romsey were purchased by Whitbread.
Whilst there has been many 20th Century additions, the Horse & Groom has now been totally refurbished and care has been taken to expose many of the original features, especially the Restaurant area, thus trying to echo reminders of days long past, yet providing up to date facilities for those who wish to shoose from a varied and interesting menu, drink and excellent wine or simply retire to the courtyard on a warm summer evening with a glass of ale. |
